Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I join Mothers & More?
We're fortunate to be in an area where there are a lot of resources and activities for moms and kids. In fact, several of our members belong to more than one group. Like these other groups, we have playgroups and family activities, but more than that -- we're a playgroup for moms! Our monthly chapter meetings focus on the mother as an individual. Who were you before you were "mommy"? Are you getting everything that you need while you're giving so much to your kids and your family? That's the more in Mothers & More. If that weren't enough, because we're a national organization, you can connect with like-minded women across the country who know just what you're going through. (Sometimes it helps to chat with folks who you don't have to see at the next park playdate.) If you move, your membership moves with you. With about 125 chapters across the country, you can bet that we'll be there.
Unlike some groups that restrict the geographic location of their membership, we know that all moms need a community, and there isn't always a group easily accessible. Our membership is based in South Snohomish county, but we have members from all over: Mountlake Terrace to Lake Stevens, Edmonds and Mukilteo to Bothell and Snohomish. Our monthly chapter meeting typically meets in Mill Creek, but our playgroups and moms nights out occur where our moms are -- all over.
How big is the membership?
Locally, we have about 35 active members. We have moms who have left full-time employment to be at home with their children full-time; moms working part-time inside and outside the home, and moms starting up their own businesses. Moms transitioning back to work from leave, and moms pursing further education. Regardless of whether or not we work for pay, we are all similar in that we want to be the best we can be for our kids and family--and that sometimes means taking time for ourselves.
Can I come to a meeting without being a member?
You are welcome to attend up to two chapter meetings as a guest. After you see how much we have to offer and how much fun we have, we hope that you'll decide to join. At this time, playgroups are open to current members only, because they occur in members' homes.
Can I take my child to meetings?
Children are welcome at all family activities, playgroups and coffee nights. Moms nights out, monthly meetings and other mom activities are times that we reserve for adults only. They're a chance to focus on ourselves as individuals, apart from the demands of family. For some mothers, this is a rare opportunity to spend time socializing away from home without children. That being said, we welcome infants under six months old to come to these events, since this can be an especially challenging time for mom and baby to be separated. We're always very happy to see the very young ones at these meetings.
I work full-time; Do you have events that would work for my schedule?
Yes! One of the great ways that Mothers & More sets itself apart is how many events we offer at night and weekends. Monthly chapter meetings, craft nights, coffee night, moms nights out, and select playgroups and family outings would all be possibilities for the (paid) working mom.
How do I see more information on the events?
Once you become a member, you will be sent a username and a password to enter the members only section of the Web site. The calendar contains a full description of the events and locations. You'll also be able to see our photo gallery, use the discussion forums, and have full access to our membership directory.
How much does it cost to join?
A one-year membership to Mothers & More is $45. Of that, approximately one-third goes directly to the local chapter, with the remainder going to Mothers & More national. As a member, you can actively participate in local events, have full access to the Web site and the local discussion boards. You also will receive a subscription to the national magazine--FORUM--and can join any of the national discussion loops on subjects from being a stay-at-home mom to women's and work/life issues. In addition, your subscription supports the very important work at the national level raising awareness of the social and economic value of the caregiving work that all mothers do. Some of our members renew year after year, even after their lives have moved to the point where they are not actively participating in local events, simply to stay in touch with the local and national virtual communities.
How many events do I need to attend every year?
While we hope that you will want to attend lots and lots of events, we don't have a specific attendance requirement. We offer a range of activities, because we know that everyone has different interests and schedules. However, we do ask that all members volunteer three times a year. Members can facilitate a chapter meeting, host a playgroup, bring a meal to a mom in need, work a shift at our annual garage sale fundraiser, the possibilities go on. Because we're a volunteer organization, there are always ways to help out. Volunteering is one of the best ways to get to know the membership, and many of our members use their volunteer experience to enhance their resume.
Can I sign up my nanny or child's caregiver?
Anyone who devotes significant time to caregiving activities is a welcome member of Mothers & More. The caregiver would be welcome at all chapter events. Since a significant proportion of our events are in the evening, we recommend that you purchase two memberships--one for yourself as well. This way, your child and caregiver can attend playgroups during the day, and you can connect with other women balancing work and life at our evening and weekend activities.
